Theodore Epp was a famous Bible teacher in the USA, who is best remembered for the Radio ministry that he founded in Nebraska in 1939 which still broadcasts in 17 countries and 25 languages. Because Dr. Epp was very concerned about the attacks that were being made upon the Scriptures and the departure from the Bible that was taking place, he named the Radio ministry ‘Back to the Bible’. That was a good choice and that’s the message I want to leave with you today; the need to ‘Get Back to the Bible’.
When Josiah was King in Judah the land was in a shocking state because God’s Word had been lost. It’s hard to take that in – a Land without the Bible. But that’s the condition they were in; the Scriptures hadn’t been seen for years. But when they were repairing the Temple in Jerusalem they found the Scriptures buried among the ruins and then King Josiah laboured tirelessly to turn the nation ‘Back to the Bible’.
And the reality is, that what we need most is that our Land, our Churches, our lives and our homes today is exactly the same; we also need to ‘Get Back to the Bible’.
For one thing, we need to get back to loving the Bible as we once did. Just think for a moment about this question, ‘How much do you love the Bible?’ David could say, “Consider how I love thy precepts” (Psalm119:159). If we are honest there are times that we love the world, money and pleasure more than the Scriptures. It is possible that you might say, “But I would defend the Bible, I would even die for it”. And it is good and commendable that you have those convictions. But do you read the Bible daily because that’s the definite mark of a person that loves the Scriptures.
Andrew Bonar got into the habit of spending two hours with the Lord every morning and he did that because he loved the Lord and he loved His Word. Now I know that you may not have that sort of time in the morning but the question is, do we have the
same love for the Bible?
The Church at Ephesus had ‘left their first love’ (Rev 2:4). Perhaps that is your condition also, you must acknowledge that you don’t love the Bible as you once did. There was a time that you loved the reading and the preaching of God’s Word more than you do now. If that is so, then what you need is to get back to the Bible and especially you need to get back to ‘the first love’ that you had for the Bible.
