A motorist was on a journey through Scotland and part of his route passed through the town of Kilmacolm in Renfrewshire. As he was a bit uncertain about which way to go next he stopped with some roadmen and asked them the way to Glasgow. The men, who knew the area well, were able to give very clear directions that would take him to his destination. But just as he was about to drive off one of the roadmen asked him this pointed question – do you know the way to Heaven? “No, I don’t” was the reply of the motorist. The roadman immediately responded with the words, ‘Jesus said, “I am the Way”’ (John 14:6). The man thanked the road worker for his message and then drove on to Glasgow but for the rest of his journey he turned over in his mind the words that he had just heard.
After he had returned to London the same motorist was involved in a serious road accident. He was taken to hospital but he had only a short time to speak with his family before he died from his injuries.
Ten days later two young men arrived in Kilmacolm enquiring as to where they might find the Christian road worker. These two men were the sons of the motorist who had just been buried but before his death he instructed them to take a journey to Scotland to find the road worker and to thank him for telling him the way to Heaven – they said “father understood what you said and is now in Heaven”.
Do you know the way to Heaven? That is a vital question. As the Hymn writer said, ‘On the Golden streets of heaven all men hope to walk someday’. And I’m sure that you want to go to heaven when your life is over. But, do you know how to get there? Let me make it clear that there is a way to Heaven. There is no need for uncertainty on this vital matter. Heaven is not an unapproachable or an inaccessible place. But remember that Heaven is God’s dwelling place. So, if you would want to know how to get there you must listen to what God has to say; not to the notions and theories of men (Prov 14:12). If you want to go to heaven then you must turn to the Word of God because it is the Bible alone that tells you how to get there. And what the Bible teaches is this: the way to Heaven is simply by putting your trust in Jesus Christ alone as your Saviour (Acts 4:12 & Acts 16:31).
